About the Opportunity

 

The South Australian Council of Social Service (SACOSS) is seeking a Project Officer to develop and implement a disaster resilience project on the roles and responsibilities for community service organisations providing services to people at risk. This is a new project which calls for great networking and community development skills and a passion for working with and for the community.

 

This project aims to:

  • Clarify what are the roles and responsibilities for community service organisations (CSO's - including health services) who provide regular services to people at risk before, during and after emergency events; and
  • Develop a common understanding amongst CSO's of what they are required to do before, during and after an emergency to maintain the safety and wellbeing of their clients.

The SACOSS Project Officer will work under the direction of the SACOSS Policy Director to help deliver the outcomes of this project. The key work includes:

  • Cataloguing the range of CSOs in 7 selected locations across the state, and the obligations of those organisations in relation to disaster resilience
  • Conducting workshops with those CSOs
  • Developing a matrix of responsibilities for CSOs in relation to disaster prevention, preparedness, response and recovery
  • Working with government and business to map those roles in the 7 locations
  • Conducting a pre and post-project survey to help determine the effectiveness of the project

The position is offered as a fix-term, part-time contract position for one year.  The role is primarily based in the Unley offices however approximately 14 regional trips across the year will be required.

 

About You

 

You have extensive experience and understanding of the community services sector and are able to build relationships and influence a broad range of stakeholders.  You will be confident reading and understanding funding contracts and be comfortable presenting to groups of people.

 

You will bring:

  • Knowledge and/or experience in community development and the community services sector.
  • High level experience in developing networks and partnerships with government and non-government agencies, and in providing advice to a range of people and organisations in the area of change management.
  • Demonstrated high level communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to work across a broad range of stakeholders at all levels of an organisation
  • Proven ability to implement projects within a structured framework to achieve program objectives.
  • Awareness of the social, environmental and economic issues impacting on vulnerable and disadvantaged people in South Australia.
  • Ability to work in a small team and a commitment to SACOSS’ vision and purpose.

Knowledge of the disaster response or emergency services sector is highly desirable.

 

About SACOSS

 

SACOSS undertakes research to help inform community service practice, advocacy and campaigning, and through a range of events promotes cooperation, and the sharing of resources and information. As the peak body for the non-government health and community services sector in South Australia, SACOSS has a number of key roles:

  • Research, policy development and advice to government on issues affecting the sector and vulnerable and disadvantaged South Australians
  • Representing the sector’s interest and advocating on behalf of vulnerable and disadvantaged people in public policy debates and in policy and legislative processes
  • Dissemination of information from the government to the sector, and from the sector to the broader community to increase understanding of the work we do and the needs of those we serve
  • Consultation and coordination of the sector to ensure we understand each other and work together
  • Building the capacity of the sector to enable better service delivery outcomes and better functioning of community organisations
